Let the Baron take you to the bars, the gogos and the nightife of Pattaya - the orginal party town.
In recent years Pattaya has virtually replaced Bangkok as the centre of Nightlife in the Kingdom. The new closing times and regulations that have hit the capitals nightlife have failed to reach Pattaya. Bars and gogos in Pattaya are often said to be beyond regulation: recent events would suggest this is so. Pattaya is the definitive party town: there is only one reason for its existents: for people to play. The bars and gogos will make certain you can play long and hard!
Pattaya is a seaside resort with a massive tourist trade as well as a large population of resident ex-pats. Jomtien, which is effectively part of Pattaya, is a real beach resort, whereas the Pattaya beach is more looked at than used. Until recently the pollution in Pattaya bay was such that swimming was not recommended. But that has been cleaned up and the sea is supposedly safe to swim in, although only the brave, and the foolhardy, do it that often.
If you want bars Pattaya has them in multitudes. It also has hotels of every size and shape, and they are normally competitively priced. Not far from Pattaya are several good golf courses and, as mentioned, Jomtien offers a good swimming beach. There are plenty of dive schools and opportunities for most recreational activities. There are even a few decent restaurants.
Getting to Pattaya
From Bangkok a Taxi Meter will normal charge around 1,000 baht, assuming the fare is agreed before departure. The new freeways make the journey time about 2 hours. Hotels can normally provide transport and there are regular minibus services.
There is an airport near Pattaya (Utapao) which has services to Samui and beyond since the Samui service connects with Phuket. There is a mini bus service from the airport to your Pattaya hotel.
Bars and Nightlife
The straight answer is that Pattaya is one large bar area. You are never far from a cold beer or a hot (if not hot at least obliging) lady. Walking street is the main bar area, but Pattayland has many gogo bars as well as many other bars. Soi Post Office and Soi Yamato is the next area down, however this area tends to be a little passé. The current hot area is Soi 7 & 8, whilst Soi 6 has some interesting afternoon/early evening bars and Soi Bukow has suddenly sprung to life..
Getting Around
The baht buses, as they are called, run a really good service around the circuit of Beach road and Second road. They also go around other parts, just ask before getting in. In Pattaya centre the fare is a flat 10 baht per person, anywhere else check unless you know the fare. There are a few taxi maters around as well as hotel taxis.
